4lbLard or tallow
8 2/3ozLye
3 1/3cCold water

1. Heat lard or tallow to 120-130 degrees in an enamel kettle. 2. In a separate enamel pan stir together lye and cold water and heat to 90-95 degrees. 3. Slowly pour the lye solution into the melted fat stirring with a wooden spoon. 4. Simmer and stir until thick enough to hold its shape (around 30 minutes). 5. Pour to a deppth of 1 to 1 1/2 inches in greased glass or enamel pans. 6. Cool overnight. 7. Cut into bars and remove from pan after several days. 8. Allow to age 2 weeks before using.

Nov. 10, 1996..Made 16 bars. Think I got the heat too high, and it started to separate. Then it wouldn't set up. Put it a batch at atime in the blender, poured in mold. Worked OK. Then it really set up quick. Smells and looks just like old fashioned lye soap.
