STENCILED COOKIES:

To make stencils, cut squares of waxed paper to fit over cookies. In the center of the square draw the desired shape, tracing a design or using tiny cookie or hor d'oeuvre cutters as patterns, if desired. Using scissors, cut out the center shape. Or, use stencils purchased from a crafts store.

Place the paper stencil over the cookie. Sift powdered sugar from a sieve over the stencil. Carefully remove the stencil. When using colored sugar, sprinkle with a spoon. Use powfered sugar or Chocolate Powdered Sugar for unfrosted baked cookies. Use colored sugar on unbaked cookies or frosted baked cookies.

Chocolate Powdered Sugar: In a small bowl stir together 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon unsweetened cocoa.

Note: Chocolate Powdered Sugar is quite light in color. Dark chocolate cookies show it off best.

To make a snowflake stencil, cut a square of waxed paper. Fold into quarters, then in half diagonally to make a triangle. Strip shape out of both folded edges and the point; unfold.

Or, use a tiny cookie cutter or hors d'ouvre cutter as a stencil. Place the cutter on an unbaked sugar cookie. Spoon a small amount of colored sugar on the cookie inside the cutter. Use a toothpick or skewer to brush the sugar into all areas of the cutter.
