Title: Monday Madness
Categories: Breadmaker
Yield: 1 Servings

Well, here it is Monday. I leaped (lept?) out of bed bright and early and prepared to make my very first loaf of bread in my brand spanking new breadmaker. I read all the instruction books last night and was semi-familiar with the procedure, but got them out and re-read them. I took the bread pan out of the machine and inserted the mixer blade. Then I got out the recipe booklet and decided to start with the basic loaf that was the first one in the booklet that came with the machine, figuring it should be foolproof if the mfg. recommended it. I proceeded to dump in the water first, then the flour, sugar, salt, etc. Got to the butter ingredient and noticed there was water all over the counter. I glanced up and noticed with horror that the bread pan was still on the counter, empty. I had been dumping the ingredients directly into the machine!

PANIC TIME! I dumped as much as I could into the sink. Got all excited and started bawling and screaming and remembered a toll free number that came with the machine. The lady on the other end obviously did not understand the gravity of the situation and tried to tell me to call someplace in Calif. I told her I needed help NOW and there had to be someone there who could help me. She put me on hold for an eternity of at least 30 seconds during which I had at least THREE nervous breakdowns. A very laid back gentleman came on the line and between sobs and tears, I managed to tell him what I had done. He told me to calm down and take a deep breath (the nerve of him - obviously he had never had this happen to HIM!). He told me to go get some paper towels and start wiping out the mess and get as much water, flour etc. off the elements that I could. He didn't think it was as bad it looked (which was AWFUL!) He even gave me permission to call him back if it did not work. Nice man.

Well, I grabbed the paper towels and started cleaning. A roll of towels and two hours later, it finally looked pretty good. I was pretty careful not to jiggle the sensor, and tried to get all the goo off the elements. I let it sit for awhile and tried to work up my courage to try again.

After about half an hour, I decided to put the pan back in and try again. I dumped all in again and set the machine and started cleaning up the kitchen, which by this time, looked like hurricane Andrew had struck - big time!

The bread came out WONDERFUL!

Then when I was putting the flour in canisters (had to buy the white bread flour in a 10 lb. bag) and the yeast in a glass jar, what do I do? I dumped a whole bunch of flour all over the carpet in the dining room!

What do I conlude from all this? I think the machine is great, and I am looking forward to trying some new recipes - but NEVER AGAIN on a MONDAY!

Sigh - all's well that ends well.

How was YOUR Monday?
