Title: French Tuiles
Categories: Holiday Cookie
Yield: 3 Dozen

3/4cEgg whites; unbeaten
1 2/3cSugar
1/4tsSalt
3/4cButter; melted
1/4cMargarine; melted
1cFlour
3/4cAlmonds; finely chopped
ICING
4 Squares unsweetened
  . chocolate
2tbMargarine
1lbConfectioners' sugar
1/2cMilk
1tsVanilla
DECORATIONS
  Walnuts; chopped
  Chocolate jimmies
  Shredded coconut

Preheat oven to 350øF. Mix egg whites, sugar and salt. Gradually add cooled melted butter and margarine, beating at low speed. Add flour and mix thoroughly. Add almonds and mix.

On stainless steel cookiesheet (not nonstick), place tablespoonsful of batter in 4 spots. (You cannot make more than 4 at a time because they get hard too quickly to shape when finished baking.) Bake 8 to 10 minutes, watching for cookies to brown nicely around the outer half-inch or so. Remove from oven and IMMEDIATELY, with a flat metal spatula, scrape each up from sheet. Go back to first one scraped up and roll into ice cream cone shape. (It is wise to wear a clean oven mitt on the hand holding cookie.) This must be done quickly with all 4 cookies. If they harden too quickly, return to oven for several seconds to soften.

Continue until all of batter is used. When all horns are shaped, dip large end into chocolate icing then into chopped walnuts, chocolate jimmies or shredded coconut. (Using all three makes a wonderful variety on a tray).

Makes 3 dozen.

** Icing **

Microwave 4 squares unsweetened chocolate and 2 tablespoons margarine in large microwavable bowl on High (100 percent power) for 2 minutes or until melted. Make sure chocolate is completely melted. Add 1 (1-pound) package confectioners' sugar, 1/2 cup milk and 1 teaspoon vanilla; beat until well-mixed and spreadable. (If frosting thickens, add milk to thin.)
