Gently heat beer, sherry, cognac (if using) in large saucepan. Do not boil. Add sugar, ginger, and nutmeg and cook over low heat, stirring, until sugar is dissolved. Pour into punchbowl and float lemon slices and toast on surface. Or, pass toast on a separate platter so people can dip it into drink. About 20 servings."
