Title: German Pumpernickel Cubes

The first thing that comes into my mind is a variation on the cheese cubes theme: Pumpernickel cubes. You need one pack of imported Pumpernickel. This is a black whole grain bread with a very distinct slightly sweet taste. American pumpernickel (e.g. by Pepperidge Farm) is not the same product. It comes in 500g (1 pound 2oz) rectangular packs (often in silver wrap), or occasionally in round tin cans. The most likely brand you are going to find is Lieken Urkorn. It has to say Pumpernickel or Westfaelischer Pumpernickel on the pack, Vollkorn bread or something such is not the same thing.

Once you found the bread, the rest is easy. You will spread butter or cream cheese or flavored cream cheese on each slice, then pile the slices 3 or 4 slices high and finish off with a plain slice of bread. Then vertically cut the pile of bread into cubes. The bread cubes will look nice, because you will see the alternating dark bread and light cheese layers. And they are absolutely delicious! I can just keep munching them.

For the cheese layers you can use cream cheese. If you flavor it with herbes (chives e.g.) or paprika you can get a green or red color as well. Or if you prefer semi-hard cheeses, get some white or yellow cheddar or any good cheese of your liking. If you use cheddar type cheeses you should put butter on the bread first (below and above the cheese) so that the cubes hold together.
