Title: Dandelion Root Coffee

  Dandelion roots

I once tried this from a book about herbs. You pick some dandelion roots and let them dry thoroughly. I just left them on the shelf for a few days, perhaps longer. You can tell because they get dry like wood. I put them in a little coffee-bean grinder I have, and ground it to a powder. I then put it (a few spoonfuls) in simmering water in a pot on the stove...actually pre-boiling water that had a little steam rising. After about 10 minutes, I shut it off and let it sit for another 10-15 minutes. I then propped the pot at an angle until the sediment settled to the bottom, then carefully poured the clear part into a cup. It was very pleasant to sip (no sugar, cream, nothing...just as is). Quite bitter but bracing. It was lot of work for one hot beverage, but you can buy dandelion root powder in some health food stores. Roasted dandelion-root tea is also available in teabag form (which you make with boiling water like any other tea) - it doesn't have the same tonic effect as the powdered stuff, but it is milder and nuttier tasting.
