The book was produced by students in the basic literacy class of Heilsuk College in Waglisla, near Bella Bella, B.C. The elders of Bella Bella taught the students how to collect, hunt, and gather food. They also taught them how to clean, prepare, and cook it. Traditional Heiltsuk Food is available from Literacy B.C.
Into a large pot: 1. Cut up potatoes, carrots, and onions.2. Cover with water and bring to a boil.3. Add two tablespoons of ooligan grease.4. Add one quart of jarred, or on frozen barbecued salmon.5. Add more water if needed: some people like to add macaroni.6. Serve with hot tea biscuits.
Ooligans are small river fish that are an important trade food for the native people of the B.C. Interior and North West Coast.
