Bee balm, bergamot, and horsemint are the common names applied to 12 North American species of the genus Monarda of the Mint family, Labiatae. The bee balm's red, rose, lavender, or white flowers attract bees, and the red flowers also attract hummingbirds. The American Indians used bee balm leaves to make tea, and the American colonists drank a tea made from one species, M. didyma, which they called Oswego tea. Some species have a thymelike flavor, and in Mexico a type of bee balm substitutes for oregano.
