1 | c | Currants, moist |
2/3 | c | Nuts; chopped |
1 1/2 | c | Flour |
1/4 | ts | Allspice |
1/2 | ts | Cinnamon |
1/2 | ts | Nutmeg |
1/4 | ts | Salt |
1/2 | ts | Soda |
1/2 | c | Butter |
3/4 | c | Sugar |
2 | Eggs |
Grease baking sheets lightly. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Wash currants, then plump. (Put in a colander over boiling water -steam for 5 minutes, then cool.) Chop nuts. Sift flour, measure, then resift 4 times with the spices, salt and soda. Cream soft butter until shiny. Add the sugar to the butter and cream well. Beat in the eggs one at a time until fluffy. Add the flour in 2 portions, mixing until smooth after each. Stir in the currants and nuts. Drop by heaping teaspoonsful onto sheets in neat mounds 2 inches apart. Bake about 10 minutes or until nicely browned. Remove from pan immediately to cake racks to cool. Store with waxed paper between layers.
