1 | pt | Dried rose petals, packed tightly into a mason jar |
2 | tb | Salt |
3 | tb | Brown sugar |
1 | oz | Powdered orris root |
1 | oz | Powdered benzoin gum |
1 | ts | Cinnamon |
1 | ts | Cloves |
2 | ts | Allspice |
1 | oz | Cognac or fruit brandy |
Mix ingredients well. Cover and let set for a few days. Shake again to disperse ingredients. It is now ready to be put into other containers.
Purpose of the ingredients: : Rose petals: add fragrance, color and bulk to the mixture. : Salt: absorbs excess moisture and acts as a preservative. : Brown sugar: "sweetens" the mix and acts as a preservative. : Benzoin gum: stimulates the perfume of the mix and acts as a : fixing agent to control the volatility of essential floral : odors. : Orris root: acts as a fixing agent to control the volatility of : essential oils; adds a violet-like scent of its own which : complements the boquet. : Spice: enhances the fragrance. : Alcohol: acts as a solvent. Cognac adds alcohol esters and : oenanthic ether, which stimulate the perfume, giving it an : extra-potent "zest".
