INGREDIENTS | ||
201 | g | Sodium hydroxide |
12 3/4 | oz | Distilled water |
1 1/2 | tb | Ground madder root |
1 | lb | 5 oz olive oil |
1 | lb | Coconut oil |
14 | oz | Palm oil |
6 3/8 | oz | Buttermilk |
12 | g | Grapefruit seed extract, optional |
7 | ts | Rose oil |
1. Dissolve the sodium hydroxide into the 12.8 ounces of water. Immediately add the 1 1/2 tb ground madder root (ground finely in a coffee grinder). Just before adding the milk to the lye, strain the solid madder root from the liquid lye. The pieces of root are too scratchy for inclusion in the soap.
2. When the lye solution and the melted fats and oils come close to the desired soapmaking tempurature, gently heat the milk to the same temperature. Whisking quickly and firmly with a stainless-steel whisk, add the buttermilk to the lye solution. Once it is well blended, immediately begin pouring the lye/milk mixture into the melted fats and oils, beating briskly and firmly from start to finish.
