INGREDIENTS
2tbStearic acid
1 1/2cWater
1/2tsWashing soda
1/2tsTrisodium phosphate (TSP)
1cDiatomaceous Earth
SUPPLIES
  Double boiler with 1 pint insert
  Rubber gloves
  Stirrer
1ptJar with lid

BE SAFE: Stearic acid is flammable. Melt in a double boiler, not over direct heat. Washing soda and tsp are skin irritants. Wear rubber gloves when handling this polish. Avoid skin contact. Wear a dust mask when handling diatomaceous earth.

: With the insert empty, boil water int eh double boiler. Turn off the heat and remove double boiler to a heat-proof surface. Wearing rubber gloves, place stearic acid and 1-1/2 cups water itn the insert. Stir until searic acid is melted. Wearing a dust mask, stir in remaining ingredients to make a smooth, creamy paste. Pour into the jar; cool before using.

NOTES: Buy stearic acid at craft shops that sell candle making supplies or through your pharmacist. Washing soda, also called sal soda is available in the detergent section of supermarkets and hardware stores. Trisodium phoshate is available at well-stocked paint supply stores and hardware stores. Diatomaceous earth is available at well stocked garden supply stores and through mail-order garden suppliers.
