1 | pk | Dry yeast |
1/4 | c | Warm water |
1 | c | Milk |
1 | tb | Sugar |
1 | tb | Plus 1 tsp olive oil |
3 1/2 | c | Flour |
1/2 | c | Whole wheat flour |
1 | lb | Italian sweet sausage or |
Turkey sausage | ||
1/2 | c | Chopped onion |
Make your own dough: dissolve yeast in the water. heat milk with sugar unrtil warm. Stir into yeast mixture with1 tbs oil. Beat with mixer medium speed adding 2 cups of flour. Beat 2 more minutes. With wooden spoon stir in whole wheat flour and enough remaining white flour to make a stiff dough. Knead smooth and elastic. Place dough in oiled bowl, cover and let rise double. While dough is rising remove sausage from casing and crumble and cook with onion over med. high heat about 15 minus. Drain off fat and cool to room temp.Punch down dough into a thick round. Carefully work sausage mixture into dough. Shape into a 8 inch round loaf. Place on a greased baking sheet.Brush with 1 tsp oil. cover and let rise 30 minutes. Brush with an egg wash. Bake in a 375 oven until golden and done. Remove to rack to cool.
