Title: Aunt Lula's Pregnant Pickles

Yield: 1 Gallon
10 | lb | Sliced cucumbers, enough to |
Fill a gallon jar | ||
2 | Onions, peeled and sliced | |
4 | c | Granulated sugar |
1/2 | c | Salt |
2/3 | ts | Dry mustard |
2/3 | ts | Turmeric |
Place onions in the bottom of a gallon jar. Top with cucumber slices. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumbers. Cover jar and refrigerate. Refrigerate 1 week before serving. The pickles keep 9 months in the refrigerator. Makes 1 gallon.
Aunt Lula was pregnant 11 times and never had the energy to make regular pickles. So she chopped, dumped and chilled the garden's bounty, according to Estelle Burney, who contributed this family recipe. Other people say the pickles got their name because they keep for an entire pregnancy.
