Title: Scalloped Apples (Aka Brown Betty)

3 | c | Tart apples, chopped |
2 | c | Soft bread crumbs |
OR crushed cornflakes | ||
2 | tb | Butter, melted |
1/2 | c | Sugar |
1 | lg | Lemon, rind/juice of |
1/4 | ts | Cinnamon |
1/4 | ts | Nutmeg |
1/4 | c | Water |
Melt the butter and add the crumbs and mix well, set aside.
Mix the sugar, spices and lemon rind and set aside.
Put 1/4 of the crumbs in the bottom of a buttered baking dish. Cover with 1/2 of the apples. Sprinkle with 1/2 of the sugar and spice mixture, then add another 1/4 of the crumbs, the remainder of the apples, and the sugar and spice mixture.
Mix the water together with the lemon juice, pour over apples. Then sprinkle the rest of the crumbs over the top
Cover and bake for 45 minutes in a preheated 375 degree oven, then uncover and bake until top layer is brown.
Serve with plain or whipped cream.
