Title: Doughnut Wonder Balls

2 | tb | Shortening |
1/2 | c | Sugar |
4 | sl | Bread; crusts removed |
1 | Egg; beaten | |
2/3 | c | Milk |
1 3/4 | c | Flour, all-purpose |
2 | ts | Baking powder |
1/2 | ts | Salt |
1/2 | ts | Nutmeg, ground |
Oil, salad |
Cream shortening and sugar. Cut bread into cubes, and combine with egg and milk; add to creamed mixture, blending well. Stir in flour, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg. Chill dough 1 hour.
Remove one-fourth of dough at a time from refrigerator; roll about 1/2" thick on a lightly floured board. Cut with a 1-1/2" cutter and fry in hot oil at 365 degrees. Drain on absorbent paper.
