A midwife and/or doctor should always be consulted in cases of heavy bleeding or hemorrhage. The following suggestions are emergency measures only, and should be used when further medical assistance is being sought. Occasionally they succeed in slowing or stopping the bleeding, making more heroic measures unnecessary, but it is always wise to consult a health professional when heavy bleeding begins.

The following formula is a favorite of many midwives and is an integral part of their birth kits.

S H E P H E R D ' S P U R S E / Y A R R O W C O M P O U N D Prepare a tincture (see General Formulas for a Healthy Pregnancy for instructions) and drink at least « teaspoon diluted in warm water every half hour. If you make the recipe in tea form, drink « cup of it every half hour. For ease in administering, as well as extra strength, the tincture may be diluted in the tea.

Another excellent remedy for heavy bleeding is Raspberry/Nettle Tea (below). Both herbs are mild astringents and effective tonics.

R A S P B E R R Y / N E T T L E T E A Use 4-6 tablespoons of herb mixture per quart of water. Add herbs to cold water and bring to a simmer over low heat. Remove from the stove immediately. Infuse for 20 minutes. Strain and drink ¬ cup of tea every half hour.

In cases of severe heavy bleeding, when nothing else seems to work, try taking ¬ teaspoon cayenne powder every 15-20 minutes. Dilute the cayenne in warm water to facilitate its going down. It will be hot, but it often works wonders. Because cayenne doesn't contract the uterus sufficiently to halt postpartum bleeding permanently, I recommend taking it with a tea made of a combination of raspberry, lady's mantle, and shepherd's purse.
